# Flip character

# 🟧 Flip character

${frame}[Video: anatomy of the Flip character block](https://celestory-docs-videos.netlify.app/en/anatomie-bloc/flipcharacter.html)

The **Flip character** block flips a character on screen horizontally, mirror-style, so that it faces the other way.

It is a **toggle**: each pass inverts the current orientation. Two Flip character blocks in a row bring the character back to its original orientation.

## 📥 Inputs

* **in (Flow)**: Entry point. As soon as the flow arrives, the flip starts; the flow resumes when the animation is over.
* **character (Character reference)**: Dropdown listing the module's characters. This block offers no mood dropdown.
* **duration (Number, default 0.4)**: Length of the flip animation, in seconds. At 0 the character is flipped at once.

## 📤 Outputs

* **out (Flow)**: The flow resumes once the flip is over.

## 💡 Example

**Scenario: turning away**

1. "Mira" was added on slot 2; her image shows her facing right.
2. The player picks the hurtful answer.
3. A Flip character block targets "Mira", duration 0.5: she pivots and ends up facing left, with a small elastic bounce at the end.
4. The flow chains into a Dialogue block where she speaks without turning back.
5. Later, a second Flip character block returns her to her original facing before the reconciliation.

## ⚙️ Technical Details

*   **Internal ID**: `flipCharacter`
* **The character must be on stage with an image displayed**: if the character was not brought in by an Add character block, the block does nothing. For an image-based character, if no mood has been applied yet (so no image is visible), the flip is recorded internally but has no visible effect.
* **A Scene block is required upstream**: with no grid of slots, the block is inoperative.
* **Animation style**: for an image-based character the flip uses an elastic effect (a slight bounce at the end); for a Spine character, a smooth ease in and out.
* **The module setting "Character mirror transition duration"** is offered in the delay panel but is not used anywhere by the player: only this block's `duration` input counts.
* **Combining with the Add character "mirror" option**: for an image-based character the two mechanisms do not go through the same path (one flips the mood texture, the other animates the sprite scale). Combining them gives an unpredictable result: prefer using only one of them.
* **"Disable every transition and delay" setting**: when it is on, the duration is forced to 0 and the flip is instant.

* **Add character**: its `mirror` input lets a character walk in already flipped.
* **Move character**: to change slot, not facing.
